Prepare Thyself: Feb. 16 – 22

Another week in the books for our teams with ‘meh’ results:

  • Michigan Hockey: 2-0
  • Michigan Basketball: 1-1
  • Red Wings: 2-1-1
  • Pistons: 0-2

Grad total: 5-5 (Counting the SO loss for the Wings as a loss)

For the second week in a row, Michigan hockey led the charge, with a weekend sweep of Nebraska-Omaha. Michigan hoops struggled with Michigan State in a tough home loss, but bounced back nicely yesterday for an OT win at Northwestern. The Wings took two early in the week to get the winning streak to six, before losing to Columbus and Colorado. And the Pistons sputtered into the All-Star break with losses to Chicago and Atlanta.

So, who we got this week?

Michigan Basketball

  • Thursday, February 19 vs. Minnesota – 7:00 PM (Big Ten Network)
  • Sunday, February 22 at Iowa – 4:00 PM CST (Big Ten Network)

Michigan Hockey

  • Friday, February 20 at Ohio State – 7:05 PM (Big Ten Network)
  • Saturday, February 21 at Ohio State – 8:05 PM (CBS College Sports)

Red Wings

  • Wednesday, February 18 vs. Nashville – 7:30 PM (FSN Detroit)
  • Friday, February 20 vs. Anaheim – 7:30 PM (FSN Detroit)
  • Saturday, February 21 at Minnesota – 8:00 PM (FSN Detroit)

  • Tuesday, February 17 vs. Milwaukee – 7:30 PM (FSN Detroit)
  • Thursday, February 19 vs. San Antonio – 8:00 PM (TNT)
  • Sunday, February 22 at Cleveland – 8:00 PM (ESPN)

Game of the Week

Michigan Hockey: Weekend series vs. OSU

Uh…well…here’s the thing. Michigan/OSU in ANY sport would normally take this spot all by itself. However, Michigan has already locked up a first round bye in the CCHA, which means that it might be time to rest some players. However, they need to keep winning to set themselves up for a solid national seeding, so this should mean that everyone goes 110% in these games. OSU, on the other hand, is playing for their national tournament life, so you know they are going to bring it. Any doubts about Michigan mailing it in for the rest of the regular season should be put to rest very quickly. This one is going to be good.(And it’s on TV!)

One more game is grabbing my undivided attention this week as well:

Pistons: Sunday, February 22 at Cleveland – 8:00 PM (ESPN)

DEEETROIT BAAAASKETBALL gets the additional nod this week. I’m interested to see how this team comes out of the All-Star break. Will they continue just plodding along the path of apathy, or will they crank it up and start moving away from mediocrity. No better place than “the Q” to see what kind of mind frame the Pistons look to carry into the second half of the season. And it’s on ESPN, so I can watch it. In fact, the Pistons get two games on network TV this week, with the game against the Spurs on Thursday being shown on TNT (c’mon Marv Albert!!! “YESSSH! OH, THE FACIAL FROM PRINCE!!!”)

Non-Michigan/Detroit Game You Shouldn’t Miss

1. UConn vs. 4. Pittsburgh – Monday, February 16 – 7:00 PM (ESPN)

Not only will this be a HUGE game for both Big East picture and the national picture, it directly impacts Michigan. A win for UConn looks to help the Wolverines, who lost a close one against the Huskies two weeks ago, and lord knows we need all the help we can get in the quest for a dance bid.
